The FOCUS era has come to a close, leaving with it an immense feeling of pride and achievement in the loud, impressive production orchestrated by the students involved in the committee, and a sensational charitable donation now in the hands of the Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity.
But for everyone inspired by FOCUS, a new year brings a new opportunity to create and evolve. And as exams have ended and we all go home (or away) for summer, our new committee have been elected and are meeting to begin working on GUCFS’s most exciting project yet! Twenty-seven heads are buzzing with ideas for our next journey… But for now, GUCFS would like to introduce a select few of 2019’s ground control.
President: Raphaella Gordon-Saker
Fourth Year - Art History
Fun fact: I dislocated my elbow this year at Daft Friday.
I joined GUCFS in my first year as a Brand Ambassador. It was the perfect way for me to fuse all of my interests together, I’ve always been interested in the creative spheres but also have quite a business-orientated mind, and wanted to merge these to make a difference. This will be my fourth year in the society, its been incredible watching GUCFS grow year by year and I’m very excited to see what we can do this year.
Vice President Operations:
Third Year – History
Fun fact: I’m double jointed in both my thumbs.
I joined GUCFS after going to HORIZON in my first year and being a part of it is the best thing I’ve done at UofG! Last year I was Director of Charities which allowed me to have a hands on experience with working with the charity and organising GUCFS’ fundraisers as well as getting to know everyone in the society. I’m really excited about being Vice President for GUCFS 2019 alongside Eilidh and can’t wait work with her and the rest of the committee to help GUCFS grow and build on our success from last year!
Model Management: Sam Holburn
Fourth Year – Sociology
Fun fact: I failed my driving test first time round with three majors, luckily I passed it second time round, with just one minor... practise makes perfect!
This year I am in charge of Model Management after being a model for the past two years. I joined GUCFS two years ago as I hadn't really got involved with any societies at uni and my pals Eilidh and Raffy recommended it to me as a fantastic society. Since then we have raised over £30,000 for charity which is ridiculous and I can't wait to see what we can raise next year. I'm already so excited for the rehearsals at the beginning of next year because it's the first step towards the start of the the big show, which will be incredible!!
Head of Womenwear:
Second Year – Sociology and Film & TV Studies
Fun fact: I’m an identical twin!
I have always been passionate about fashion and all aspects of the industry so when I found out about GUCFS I had to get involved. In my first year I was a dresser at the FOCUS 2018 show; it was an amazing experience and gave me a chance to get involved backstage which was very exciting. For the 2019 show, I managed to achieve the role of Head of Womenswear which I am so excited about! It’s a fantastic chance to make connections in the industry and experience what working in the industry would actually be like. I am so grateful to have this role and opportunity and can’t wait for the year ahead! I’m so excited to see the show come together and start working on photo shoots.
External Marketing: Lauren Donaldson
Third Year – Law
Fun Fact: I am so clumsy I once shut my hand in a sliding taxi door and broke it in two places!
After seeing the success of HORIZON when I was in first year at Glasgow University, I knew I wanted to become part of GUCFS so I applied to be a Brand Ambassador for FOCUS 2018. I loved the experience and learned so much taking part in the BA projects such as working with the publicity and marketing teams. This year, following my experiences as a BA, I decided to apply to for a role on the marketing team and have now taken up the External Marketing role! I knew I wanted to join a society at university, but none seemed right for me until I heard about GUCFS. It has allowed me to make some amazing friends while doing something so worthwhile for charity. I am able to put my interests in fashion, business and charity to good use!
